New collaboration between USJ Macao and the Macao Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon, Portugal

The University of Saint Joseph Macao is creating new collaborations with the Macao Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon, Portugal, furthering links between academics in China, Macao Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking countries.
Coinciding with the closing ceremony of the Macao Scientific and Culture Center’s (“CCCM”) Spring Lecture Series in Lisbon, Professor Álvaro Barbosa, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation of the University of Saint Joseph Macao (“USJ Macao”) will give a presentation on USJ Macao’s positioning in the territory’s higher education as a university with Portuguese tradition that is “in, of and for” Macao and China.
In conversation with the President of CCCM, Professor Carmen Amado Mendes, Professor Barbosa will discuss the past, present and future of higher education in Macao and explore the opportunities for a deeper collaboration between USJ Macao and CCCM, through the creation of an academic hub and project incubator, the Macau Academic Hub and Spin Incubator in Lisbon. USJ Macao and CCCM have been actively working together since 2021 when they signed a cooperation protocol. This event marks the next important step in the collaboration between the two institutions.
The event will take place on March 24, Friday at 11:00 (UTC +0, Lisbon Time Zone). The President of the CCCM, Professor Carmen Amado Mendes, and the Vice-Rector for Internationalization of the USJ Macao, Professor Álvaro Barbosa, will make the first public presentation of this collaboration. The session will be open to the participation of all interested parties in person at the premises of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Center, at Rua da Junqueira, 30, in Lisbon, and also via the Zoom platform through the following link:

Background:
The University of Saint Joseph in Macao is a Catholic university, established as a private, autonomous, non-profit institution of higher education rooted in the long tradition of intercultural exchange in Macao since the foundation of the College of Saint Paul in 1594. In 1996, The Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) and the Diocese of Macau created the University of Saint Joseph (USJ Macao) under the previous name of Inter-University Institute of Macau (IIUM). It remains affiliated with UCP, with the rectors of the respective institutions serving on the governing bodies of both institutions. There is frequent exchange of students and academic staff, and with a number of joint programmes.
To establish closer ties with Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking countries, USJ Macao established a permanent delegation in Portugal in 2022. This week it has participated Futurália 2023 Education Fair in Lisbon, the only university from China represented in this significant event in Portugal.
The Macau Scientific and Cultural Center is a public institute under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education dedicated to the study and teaching of the Chinese language, culture, and history, and a centre for research and advanced continuous training on the relations between Portugal and China, and between Europe and Asia, with the mission of producing, promoting and disseminating knowledge about Macau as a platform between Portugal and the People’s Republic of China, as well as between Europe and Asia.

Colaboração entre a Universidade de São José de Macau e o Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau – Promovendo ligações entre académicos na China, Macau, Portugal e os países de língua oficial portuguesa
Coincidindo com o encerramento das “Conferências da Primavera” do Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau (“CCCM”) o Professor Álvaro Barbosa, Vice-Reitor para a Internacionalização da Universidade de São José de Macau (“USJ Macau”) fará uma apresentação sobre o posicionamento da USJ Macau no ensino superior do território como universidade de Macau e da China, para Macau e para China mas de tradição portuguesa.
Em conversa com a Presidente do CCCM, Professora Carmen Amado Mendes, o Professor Álvaro Barbosa discutirá o passado, o presente e o futuro do ensino superior em Macau e explorará as oportunidades para uma colaboração mais profunda entre a USJ Macau e o CCCM, através da criação de uma interface de investigação académica e de uma incubadora de projetos, o Macau Academic Hub e Spin Incubator in Lisbon. A USJ Macau e o CCCM têm trabalhado desde 2021, quando assinaram um protocolo de cooperação. Este evento marca o próximo passo importante na colaboração entre as duas instituições.
O evento terá lugar no dia 24 de Março, sexta-feira às 11:00 (UTC +0, Fuso Horário de Lisboa). A Presidente do CCCM, Professora Carmen Amado Mendes, e o Vice-Reitor para a Internacionalização do USJ Macau, Professor Álvaro Barbosa, farão a primeira apresentação pública desta colaboração. A Universidade de São José de Macau é uma universidade católica, estabelecida como uma instituição privada, autónoma e sem fins lucrativos de ensino superior enraizada na longa tradição de intercâmbio intercultural em Macau desde a fundação do Colégio de São Paulo em 1594.
