The conference aimed to address and propose solutions for critical issues that are faced in Europe and Latin America, including disorganised migration, youth demotivation, cultural barriers, and a decline in innovation.
Prof. José Manuel Simões, Coordinator of the Master of Communication and Media programme at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), was invited to give a an opening talk and a keynote speech at the 1º Encontro internacional das Cidades Inteligentes às Cidades MIL 2024 (Edição Portugal) – (“1st International Conference from Smart Cities to MIL Cities 2024 (Portugal Edition)”) . The conference was held at Mouraria Creative Hub in Lisbon, Portugal, from the 4th to 5th of December 2024,.
The conference aimed to address and propose solutions for critical issues that are faced in Europe and Latin America, including disorganised migration, youth demotivation, cultural barriers, and a decline in innovation. Discussions were anchored in the strategies and guidelines for developing UNESCO’s MIL Cities.
Prof. Simões opened the Conference with a talk titled “Values and Ethical Solutions for the Sustainable Future of MIL Cities”, which featured a video presentation titled “Ethical Values”. This video, directed by Prof. Simões and produced by students from USJ’s Communication and Media programme, was adapted to the context of MIL Cities.
During his keynote presentation at the special session with high-level panellists, Prof. Simões discussed about the cultural and technological barriers in which psychological obstacles hinder and prevent the learning and proper use of technology, even though there is access to it.
