Faculty of Health Sciences invited Ms. Helen Lao Ian Leong, psychological counsellor of Counselling Centre, to share a talk on emotional awareness – “A dive into emotion as a contribution of mental health” for our undergraduates.
In response to the theme ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’. of 2022’s World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. The University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Faculty of Health Sciences invited Ms. Helen Lao Ian Leong, psychological counsellor of Counselling Centre, to share a talk on emotional awareness – “A dive into emotion as a contribution of mental health” for our undergraduates. The talk covered the nature, functions and fundamental adaptive characteristics of emotions. Ms. Lao also explained the blockages of genuine emotional experiences in the process of socialization which hampered mental health. By learning to correctly identify and label emotions, one could be more congruent and act appropriate in expressing emotions. The individual could become a better person and to able to have more satisfaction in interpersonal relationship. Through this psychoeducational talk, we hope to prepare our students to be health ambassadors, starting from paying attention to their own wellbeing, and utilize their learning in psychology to support people around them.
