The 2023 Spring Coastal Cleanup was successfully held on Saturday, March 11, thanks to the commitment of staff and students of the University of Saint Josephs (USJ), Green Future, Sands Eco Ambassadors, and members of the community, who worked together to make a significant impact on the environment.

The event, organised by the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) at USJ and supported by Green Future, aimed to make Macao’s coast cleaner and the oceans safer.

An impressive turnout of both the youth and the elders supporting the cause clearly indicates the growing awareness and commitment to environmental sustainability and preservation by the local Macao community. USJ and Green Future hope this event will encourage others to take similar actions and join future cleanup drives.

This important activity was organised within the context of the project “Wetland ecosystems: a nature-based solution for coastal protection and plastic pollution entrapment in Macao” (funded by the Drop by Drop project) which aims to assess plastic pollution along Macao’s coastal environment, as well as investigate the role of wetland ecosystems as a nature-based solution for coastal defense and plastic pollution entrapment, through scientific research and community outreach.
