The Macau Observatory for Social Development of University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and The Macau Association for Community Care Children co-organised the “2024 Greater Bay Area Children and Youth Development Roundtable”. The event was held at Don Bosco Auditorium in Ilha Verde on October 8, 2024.

This roundtable was held for the 4th time at USJ. Experts and scholars from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area were invited to discuss educational strategies for the growth and development of children and youth. Prof. Jacky Ho, Mr. Sun Iok Leong, Mr. Hon In Vu and Mr. Anthony Leung were the keynote speakers to discuss different topics with the audience.

Prof. Jacky Ho, Dean of USJ, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at USJ, said ‘We hope to invite relevant education professionals, scholars and experts in the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area to participate in the roundtable to discuss how different factors in the society affect schools and educational institutions, teachers, students and families, so that we can plan for the long-term development of our society.

The roundtable explored the psychological resilience of adolescents with a focus on family education. Based on the analysis of past studies, the growth of adolescents is closely related to their families of origin, but there are changes in the functioning of families in today’s society, so it is necessary to reflect on whether the current local policies are in line with the actual needs of the family, and whether they meet the actual needs of the family. Family-friendly measures should try to make a breakthrough and leap forward, so as to transform the functions of families in the future and enable young people to have a pleasant platform for growth.’

Meanwhile, in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Macao’s handover and in line with the SAR Government’s future policy objectives and measures on youth development, the event aims to pass on the spirit of patriotism and love for Macao, to strengthen young people’s sense of patriotism, and to jointly encourage the cultivation of young people’s participation in society and their awareness of social development, and in turn, to promote the society’s concern for youth issues.
