The Second Deignan Award officially kick-off and opens for application

Organized by Wofoo Social Enterprise, Macau Ricci Institute, and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao, the Second Deignan Award for Responsible Entrepreneurship was officially launched on Monday, May 20th at FHKA Seminar Hall, Xiqu Centre. The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Ho Kai-ming, JP, Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare and over 80 guests from government, commercial and community sectors.

Dr. Stephan Rothlin S.J., Chairman of the Deignan Award, Dr. Joseph Lee, GBS, OStJ, JP, Vice-Chairman of Deignan Award and Mr. Ho Kai-ming, JP, Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare unveiled the year theme of Deignan Award “Corporate Philanthropy – Sharing Values, Determination, and Compassion”, during the kick off ceremony, together with panelists of the day. The launch ceremony was followed by a Panel Discussion on the topic “The Power of Philanthropy for SMEs”.

Dr. Joseph Lee emphasized the pivotal role of philanthropic initiatives, underscoring the principle of “Do Well, Do Good.” He stated, “The Deignan Award aims to amplify success stories and catalyze wider corporate philanthropy in Hong Kong. Our ultimate goal is to foster harmony and prosperity, but this requires the support and collaboration of different sectors to generate social value and drive positive change in Hong Kong and Macau.”

Dr. Stephan Rothlin acknowledged the Deignan Award’s immense potential, noting, “The award encourages companies to adhere to their core values and establish positive connections in the competitive marketplace. The participation of an academic institution underscores that this is not just a competition, but an empowering platform that connects and supports small and medium-sized enterprises, fostering a business community that embraces ethical practices and sustainable models.”

Mr. Ho Kai-ming, JP, the Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare, highlighted the influence of Catholic values on the education sector, emphasizing how they shape the character and behavior of individuals – a development that should be further encouraged for the betterment of the workforce.

Panel Discussion: The Power of Philanthropy for SMEs

The panel discussion focused on the role and impact of charitable initiatives in SMEs and the importance of “Social Conscious Leadership” in shaping organizational DNA and fostering strong values. It featured insights from Mr. Calvin Cheng, Chairman of the Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Association; Dr. Sandy Lau, Chairlady of the London Ball Foundation and Mindful Mandarins Foundation; Mr. Timas Liu, Director of Destination Design; and Ms. Ruby O, Head Judge of the First Deignan Award (Macao). The discussion was moderated by Dr. Florence Lei, Assistant Professor at the University of Saint Joseph.
