The USJ Faculty of Arts and Humanities is participating in an international multidisciplinary project entitled “Fighting Hunger: strategies and public policies for the realisation of the human right to adequate food – Transdisciplinary Approach to Food Systems with the support of Artificial Intelligence”.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is participating in an international multidisciplinary project to fight against hunger, led by the new National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) on Fighting Hunger based at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil.
The project titled “Fighting Hunger: strategies and public policies for the realisation of the human right to adequate food – Transdisciplinary Approach to Food Systems with the support of Artificial Intelligence” (Combate à Fome: estratégias e políticas públicas para a realização do direito humano à alimentação adequada – Abordagem transdisciplinar de Sistemas Alimentares com apoio de Inteligência Artificial) is funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) with a duration of 3 years, and involves an international consortium of over 30 scientists from various fields from more than two dozen Brazilian and foreign universities. This project is also under the general coordination of Professor and renowned scientist in the field of nutrition, Dirce Maria Lobo Marchioni, from the Faculty of Public Health of USP, Brazil.
The project comprises five axes: Health and Nutrition, Public Policies, Value Chain, Artificial Intelligence, and Communication. The participation of USJ, through the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, is in the “Scientific Dissemination” sub-axis under the main axis of Communication, where the parameters of the praxis of media communication will be studied as a research field focused on scientific dissemination. Professors Ricardo Alexino Ferreira from the School of Communications and Arts of the USP, Adérito Fernandes Marcos and José Manuel Simões, both from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of USJ, and Mariluce Moura from the project “Ciência na Rua”, Brazil, compose the team for this subject.
According to Professor Ricardo Alexino Ferreira, leader of the sub-axis, “it is a complex field of study, marked by inter and transdisciplinarity that deals with the concepts and languages of science journalism, science education, content and language, within epistemologies that involve the praxis of media communication”.
For Adérito Fernandes Marcos, full professor and general coordinator of the USJ’s doctoral programme, leading the project on the USJ side, “in this sub-axis, we propose to verify, deepen, study and apply different media resources to address the issue of food security and in how to broaden knowledge and make it reach and be understandable to different societies as a whole, starting with the Macanese population.”
For the sub-axis “Scientific Dissemination”, a web radio station will start operating and assembling the various poles from the Portuguese-speaking countries and territories, involving the five from Africa (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe), the two from Asia (East Timor and Macau), and Brazil and Portugal, starting with the two located at USP, Brazil, and USJ, Macau. This radio station, made by students and teachers, will focus on public scientific dissemination, including nutrition issues and combating hunger.
Professor Dirce Maria Lobo Marchioni, General Coordinator of the INCT Fight Against Hunger project, highlighted that “adequate food is a human right, and its guarantee is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. However, there is a global increase in hunger and malnutrition, aggravated by the pandemic, which is unacceptable”.
Among the participating universities outside Brazil are the University of Saint Joseph (Macao), the University of Toronto (Canada), the University of Newcastle (England), and the Universities of Lisbon and Porto (Portugal).
