The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas (UST), the oldest existing university in the Philippines, held their first virtual mutual benchmarking for the field of student services and affairs on the morning of 16 August 2022.

During the two-hour online meeting, USJ and UST aimed to find out innovations that have been put in place in the corresponding institution on the matter of Student Affairs.

Participating USJ members were welcomed by the Director of Office for Student Affairs (OSA) of UST, Assistant Professor Maria Cecilia A. Tio Cuison, and the Assistant Director of OSA of UST, Assistant Professor Maria Regina P. Arriero, with speeches and video presentations of UST. While the Director of the Office for the Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) of USJ, Ms Teresa Loong, shared the vision, mission and strategic objectives of the USJ OSAA with the office members.

The two Catholic institutions discussed the new policies, programmes, and services oriented toward its students’ integral formation and welfare, focusing on topics such as wellness promotion, personal growth enhancement, student leadership and governance, quality campus life, and grace preaching.

Though both parties have been improving in their services according to the call of the times, the two Universities are still looking for other possible ideas and practices that can serve their students better.

The benchmarking meeting was a rich and fruitful experience and a good start for both Catholic universities. Both were happy to share their best practices, attaining the mutual primordial goal of educating and molding the youth.

USJ is expecting more future collaboration with UST, including meeting in small teams according to their specialisations so the two entities may gain more valuable insights from each other.
