USJ Confers Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa Degree to Professor Yang Huilin

USJ awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa to Professor Yang Huiling from Renmin University of China, a distinguished scholar in the fields of theological hermeneutics, religious studies, and comparative literature.
Professor Yang Huilin was awarded a Doctor of Letters honoris causa degree by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Professor Carlos Sena Caires, in recognition of his contributions to academia in the fields of theological hermeneutics, religious studies, and comparative literature, and promoting collaborative scholarship between Chinese and Western scholars.
The conferral ceremony was held on the morning of July 8, 2023, at the Macau Tower Grand Hall, in conjunction with the USJ Graduation Ceremony 2023.
Professor Yang is currently University Professor and Dahua Chair Professor in Renmin University of China’s School of Liberal Arts. He served as the Dean of the Department of Chinese Linguistics and Literature at the same university from 2003 to 2005, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts from 2005 to 2009, and Dean of the School of Chinese Classics from 2014 to the present. He served as Vice President of Renmin University of China from 2008 to 2014.
Additionally, he is actively involved in prestigious academic associations, including the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA), the Chinese Comparative Literature Association (CCLA), and the Chinese Association for the Study or Religion.
Professor Yang’s extensive publication and conference record dating back to 1988 and his founding and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for the Study of Christian Culture showcases his outstanding contributions to academia.
He participated in and co-organised the Religious Studies and Comparative Literature Roundtable, “The Sacred and the Everyday”, of the 2019 ICLA Triennial Congress, held at the Seminário de São José of USJ.
His efforts in fostering collaboration between the USJ and Chinese state bodies have significantly improved relations between the University and the Central People’s Government. As a respected scholar of international standing, Professor Yang’s exceptional dedication and impact in his field of expertise perfectly align with the academic mission of USJ.
This award recognises his extraordinary contributions nationally and internationally to a field of work that is at the heart of the academic mission of USJ.
Rector of USJ, Rev’d Professor Stephen Morgan expressed that “He (…) exhibits a tireless enthusiasm for promoting the work of USJ to academics, university administrators and public servants in the People’s Republic of China. These conversations and his sustained advocacy on behalf of USJ have been in no small way influential in securing very much improved relations between the University and the Central People’s Government. (…) It is particularly fitting that the University should make this award at this time given the desire to recognise collaborative scholarship between Chinese and Western scholars in key areas of the work of USJ.”

USJ atribuiu o grau de Doutor Honoris Causa ao Professor Yang Huilin
A Universidade de São José, atribuiu no dia 8 de Julho de 2023 o grau de Doutor Honoris Causa ao Professor Yang Huilin, pelo Director da Faculdade de Artes e Humanidades, Professor Carlos Sena Caires, como reconhecimento das suas contribuições para o sector académico nas áreas da hermenêutica teológica, estudos religiosos e literatura comparativa, e pela divulgação de estudos de colaboração entre académicos chineses e ocidentais.
A cerimónia de outorga do grau honorário foi realizada na manhã de 8 de Julho de 2023, na Torre de Macau, em conjunto com a Cerimónia de Graduação da USJ.
O Professor Yang é Professor Universitário e Professor Catedrático Dahua na Escola de Artes Liberais da Universidade Renmin da China. Ele foi, de 2003 a 2005, Director do Departamento de Linguística e Literatura Chinesa, na mesma universidade onde, de 2005 a 2009, foi Director da Escola de Artes Liberais e, de 2014 até à presente data, Director da Escola de Clássicos Chineses. De 2008 a 2014, foi Vice-Presidente da Universidade Renmin da China.
De 2010 até à presente data, foi membro do concelho da Associação Internacional de Literatura Comparada (International Comparative Literature Association, ICLA) e de 2019 até ao presente dia Presidente Associado da ICLA. De 2011 a 2014, foi Presidente da Associação Chinesa de Literatura Comparada (Chinese Comparative Literature Association, CCLA), sendo desde então Vice-Presidente da CCLA. De 2011 à presente data foi Vice-Presidente da Associação Chinesa para o Estudo da Religião. Teve além dos referidos vários outros importantes cargos académicos nacionais e internacionais.
Participa também activamente em associações académicas de prestígio, incluindo a International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA), a Chinese Comparative Literature Association (CCLA) e a Chinese Association for the Study of Religion (Associação Chinesa para o Estudo da Religião).
Como fundador e Editor-Chefe do Journal for the Study of Christian Culture (Jornal para o Estudo da Cultura Cristã) e autor de numerosas importantes monografias nas áreas da hermenêutica teológica, estudos religiosos e literatura comparada, com um extenso registo de publicações e registos que se inicia em 1988, o Professor Yang é, talvez, o mais distinguido académico Chinês a trabalhar nessas áreas.
Ele participou e co-organizou a Mesa Redonda de Estudos Religiosos e Literatura Comparada, “The Sacred and the Everyday” (O Sagrado e o Quotidiano), do Congresso Trienal ICLA em 2019, que teve lugar no Seminário de São José da Universidade de São José, Macau.
Os seus esforços, no sentido de promover a colaboração entre a USJ e os órgãos estatais da China, permitiram melhorar, de forma significativa, as relações entre a Universidade e o Governo Popular Central da China.
Este título reconhece estas suas extraordinárias contribuições a nível nacional e internacional, numa área de trabalho que está no coração da missão académica da USJ.
O reitor da USJ, Reverendo Professor Stephen Morgan, expressou que “Ele exibe um entusiasmo incansável na promoção do trabalho da USJ para académicos, administradores universitários e funcionários públicos da República Popular da China. Estas conversações e a sua advocacia sustentada em representação da USJ contribuiu em larga medida para garantir relações amplamente melhoradas entre a Universidade e o Governo Popular Central. (…) É particularmente adequado que a Universidade atribua esta distinção desta vez tendo em conta o desejo de reconhecer a bolsa de cooperação entre eruditos Chineses e Ocidentais em áreas chave do trabalho da USJ.”
