On the 16th March 2025, staff and students from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) joined the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) in the annual Macao Green Week Mangrove Planting Activity, contributing to the expansion of coastal greenery in Macao. This year, 50 Aegiceras corniculatum seedlings and over 1,000 Kandelia obovata saplings were planted, marking another step in USJ’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

Growing New Green Spaces

Organised with the support of Prof. Karen Tagulao from USJ’s Institute of Science and Environment (ISE), the planting activity provided participants with hands-on experience in environmental stewardship. this initiative aligns with USJ’s ongoing efforts to protect and restore local mangrove ecosystems. As an annual participant in this meaningful event, USJ continues to contribute to strengthening coastal resilience and enhancing biodiversity.

The selected mangrove species play a critical role in:

  • Coastal Protection – Reducing erosion and acting as a natural barrier against storms.
  • Biodiversity Support – Providing habitat for a variety of marine and terrestrial species.
  • Water Filtration – Improving water quality by trapping sediments and pollutants.
  • Climate Action – Sequestering carbon and helping to mitigate climate change.

Commitment to Sustainability

USJ has been a proud participant in this annual initiative, reinforcing its dedication to ecological conservation. The university extends its gratitude to IAM for the invitation and to all students and staff who contributed to making this event a success. Through activities like this, USJ continues to encourage a deeper connection between the community and nature, fostering a greener and more sustainable Macao.
