USJ Faculty of Arts and Humanities signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with South China University of Technology

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of USJ and the School of Architecture of South China University of Technology signed a memorandum of cooperation.



The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao received a visit from a delegation from the South China University of Technology (SCUT), led by Zhang Xichun, Secretary of the Party Committee of SCUT on the 27th of March, 2025

The two parties conducted in-depth exchanges on academic cooperation, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and other issues, and signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) to further promote the cooperative relationship between the two universities.

The delegation arrived at the Ilha Verde Campus of USJ in the afternoon and were warmly received by Professor Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ, and had a sincere discussion. In his welcome speech, Rector Morgan said that USJ inherits the excellent traditions of Europe and Asia, and as a unique university, USJ is conscious and intended in becoming a super-connector between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and European countries. 

Secretary Zhang Xichun said that South China University of Technology and USJ have a close geographical relationship, and introduced the history, current situation and latest development of South China University of Technology. He believes that in addition to cooperation in architecture, both parties can develop together in more different fields, especially in international education.

Professor Carlos Sena Caires, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of USJ, and Professor Peng Changxin, Dean of the School of Architecture of South China University of Technology, signed a memorandum of cooperation to promote academic exchanges, faculty and student exchange, and joint research. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Rector and Party Secretary respectively, marking a new stage of cooperation between the two institutions.

In addition, members of the USJ delegation attending the meeting included Professor Alexandre Lobo, Vice-Rector for Academic Research and Innovation, Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector for Student Life, Professor George Du Wencai, Dean of the Institute for Data Engineering and Science, Prof. Nuno Soares, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design, Ben Lei, Head of Domestic Student Recruitment Office, and David Yang Chengdong. Members of the South China University of Technology delegation include Li Shiyong, Director of the Social Sciences Department, and Jiang Lianxia, Director of the Public Relations Department.

After the meeting, the delegation visited the St. Joseph Seminary campus, which is located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to experience the unique atmosphere of Macao’s integration of history and higher education. Later, Dr. Loong hosted a dinner to continue the exchange and discuss future cooperation directions. In the future, the two universities will carry out more substantive cooperation in the construction field to promote the development of the Greater Bay Area.
