The International Tourism Professionals Development Association, Macao (TODA) and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) launched a Diploma in Sustainable Tourism Practices on 27 March, 2025. As part of the Faculty of Business and Law’s (FBL) Sustainable Business Series project, the course aims to equip professionals with essential sustainability strategies in tourism.
The programme consists of six expert-led lectures covering topics such as tourism development, law, marketing, aviation, and culinary tourism sustainability. Participants must submit a final paper to complete the course.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by TODA Chairman Mr. José Luis de Sales Marques, a key figure in Macao’s tourism and cultural development. He discussed how tourism contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shared insights into Macao’s transformation into a tourism hub—from early tour group arrivals to the development of international hotel brands, tourism statistics collection, and the diversification of events beyond gaming.
The course attracted 25 local professionals and 18 online participants from Mozambique, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe, with sponsorship from the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gracemind Marketing & PR, and TODA members.
Participants gained valuable firsthand knowledge of tourism’s evolution and its path toward sustainability, with a focus on Macau’s development and future opportunities in the Greater Bay Area.
