103 Scholarships and Fellowships Awarded at the 2023/24 USJ Community Scholarships and Fellowships Award Ceremony

A total of 103 scholarships and fellowships were donated this year by 21 prominent local institutions and individual donors.



The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held the 2023/2024 USJ Community Scholarships and Fellowships Award Ceremony on the afternoon of 27 October 2023, at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima in Ilha Verde Campus.

Present among the guests of honour were Xu Zhiping, Deputy Director of the University Office under the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, the Most Reverend Bishop of Macao Stephen Lee Bun-Sang, Chancellor of USJ, Ms. Hoi Chi Kei, Acting Director of the Division of Tertiary Educational Cooperation and Exchange of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Ms. Iris Cheong, Head of Sponsorship Management Division of the Macao Foundation, and Ms. Janet Lui, daughter-in-law of Mr Lucas Lo, Founding Fellow of the University of Saint Joseph Court of Benefactors.

Since its creation in 2005, the USJ Community Scholarship and Fellowship Programme has been instrumental in supporting the financial needs of promising students pursuing their studies at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macao.

This year, a remarkable total of 76 scholarships and 27 community fellowships, totalling a value of MOP 3,337,500, were donated by 21 prominent local institutions and individual donors, including (listed alphabetically): Alumni Association of the University of Saint Joseph, Associação Piedosa do Escapulário do Carmo, Banco Nacional Ultramarino S.A., Bank of China Macau Branch, British Chamber of Commerce in Macao, CESL Asia – Investments & Services, Limited, China Daily Hong Kong, China Telecom, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau, Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau, CPM – Macau Parking Company Ltd., Diocese of Macau, Education Fund, Galaxy Entertainment Group, Henry Fok Foundation, Macao Foundation, Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Center, Ms. Sio Wai Chu, Mr. Lucas Lo, Sands China Ltd., and The International Ladies Club of Macau.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for the student beneficiaries to express their gratitude to each donor in person. Donors were also updated on student updates and needs, as well as the latest developments at USJ.

At the opening speech, Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ, said: “As the truly international university in Macao, USJ is dedicated also to attracting foreign talent to our city and to enhancing international diversity. In pursuit of this goal, this year, once again, full scholarships have been offered for students from Portuguese-speaking countries and for the ASEAN countries, for students seeking Bachelor and Master Degree programmes at USJ.”

This year, two new donors, including the International Ladies Club of Macau (ILCM) and Associação Piedosa do Escapulário do Carmo, offered scholarships to the incarcerated students enrolled in the USJ Prison Outreach Programme. Since 2009, USJ and the Correctional Services Bureau have been cooperating on the outreach programme, which prepares incarcerated individuals for re-entry into society by providing them with a bachelor’s degree to enhance their professional skills and increase their employment opportunities.

Additionally, Mr. Lucas Lo, Founding Fellow of the Chancellor’s Court of Benefactors of the University of Saint Joseph, continued his commitment to offer the “Lucas Lo Scholarships for the University of Saint Joseph”. The fund supported twelve students’ undergraduate studies for up to four years.

A certificate was presented to each donor to acknowledge their generosity and support who have contributed to USJ’s mission of cultivating talents for the future of Macao.
