The First International Symposium on Biographical Narratives in Media and Information Literacy Cities, Tell.Me Symposium 2024, was held on the 14th of June, 2024, at USJ Macao.
The First International Symposium on Biographical Narratives in Media and Information Literacy Cities, Tell.Me Symposium 2024, was held on the 14th of June, 2024, at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macao.
This symposium aims to promote interest in biographical narratives and their contribution to developing media-information-literacy cities, with a special emphasis on the UNESCO MIL ALLIANCE initiative and the UNESCO Universal Declaration for Cultural Diversity. The intersection between biographical narratives, supported in digital media, and cultural diversity plays a crucial role in the context of media and information literacy within modern cities.
The Tell.Me Symposium 2024 programme included invited lectures and footnotes from distinguished speakers.
Dr. Felipe Chibás Ortiz, Associate Professor of the University of São Paulo (USP) and International Co-leader of the Innovation Group of UNESCO MIL ALLIANCE, presented “Pillars for the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Cities Paradigm: The futures of the urban spaces.”
Fr. Cyril Jerome Law, Jr., Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy of USJ, delivered a lecture titled “Personal Story and Public Identity as Axis of Value Response – Lessons on Literacy and Morality from John Henry Newman (1801 – 1890) and Ma XiangBo (1840-1939).”
Reverend Professor Stephen Morgan, Rector of the University of Saint Joseph, presented “Stories and histories – taking personal stories seriously.”
Dr. António Carvalho Maneira, Assistant Professor at IADE – European University (EU) in Lisbon, Portugal, discussed “Enhancing Digital Literacy with Students’ Digital Storytelling Projects.”
Dr. Pedro Alves da Veiga, Digital Media Artist and Assistant Professor at Aberta University in Lisbon, Portugal, presented his video artwork “BioFlux,” which explores and deconstructs biographical narratives using generative techniques.
Prof. Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, Dean of USJ’s Doctoral School, presented “Some Remarks on Biographical Narratives“, summarising the symposium’s presentations and describing how biographical narratives can enrich the body of doctoral theses in the form of short stories told in the first person, about episodes in the implementation of the research project (successes, difficulties, decisions taken, etc.), which makes it possible to provide additional levels of authenticity to the written text.
The lectures and footnotes presented at the Tell.Me Symposium 2024 will be extended and published as full papers in a special issue of the international scientific journal ROTURA (Scopus indexed), hosted by CIAC – Research Centre in Arts and Communication.
The Tell.Me Symposium 2024 is organised by the USJ Doctoral School and Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy, and hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, sponsored by UNESCO MIL ALLIANCE, ARTECH International, and CIAC, with the artwork sponsored by the Macao Foundation.
According to Prof. Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, who developed the framework for the Tell.Me Symposium, this Symposium is the first in a series of events to be held each year under this theme, with an expected international turnout in addition to PhD students. The Tell.Me 2024 Symposium attracted around 40 participants from more than a dozen nationalities.

O Primeiro Simpósio Internacional sobre Narrativas Biográficas em Cidades com Literacia dos Media e da Informação, Tell.Me Symposium 2024, realizou-se no dia 14 de Junho de 2024, na Universidade de São José (USJ) em Macau.
Este simpósio tem como objetivo promover o interesse pelas narrativas biográficas e a sua contribuição para o desenvolvimento das cidades com literacia dos media e da informação, com especial ênfase dado à iniciativa UNESCO MIL ALLIANCE e a Declaração Universal da UNESCO para a Diversidade Cultural. A intersecção entre as narrativas biográficas, apoiadas nos meios digitais, e a diversidade cultural desempenha um papel crucial no contexto da literacia dos media e da informação nas cidades desenvolvidas ou em vias de desenvolvimento.
O programa do Simpósio Tell.Me 2024 incluiu palestras abertas e comentários por oradores com trabalho na área.

Dr. Pedro Alves da Veiga, artista de média e professor auxiliar na Universidade Aberta, em Lisboa, Portugal, apresentou a sua obra de vídeo “BioFlux“, que explora e desconstrói narrativas biográficas utilizando técnicas generativas.
Professor Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, Diretor da Escola Doutoral da USJ, apresentou “Some Remarks on Biographical Narratives”, resumindo as apresentações do simpósio e descrevendo como as narrativas biográficas podem enriquecer o corpo das teses de doutoramento na forma de pequenas histórias contadas na primeira pessoa, acerca de episódios da implementação do projeto de investigação (sucessos, dificuldades, decisões tomadas, etc.), o que permite proporcionar níveis adicionais de autenticidade ao texto.
As palestras e notas de rodapé apresentadas no Simpósio Tell.Me 2024 serão desenvolvidas e publicadas como artigos completos em número especial da revista científica internacional ROTURA (indexada à Scopus), organizada pelo CIAC – Centro de Investigação em Artes e Comunicação.
O Simpósio Tell.Me 2024 é organizado pela Escola Doutoral e pela Faculdade de Estudos Religiosos e Filosofia, e acolhido pela Faculdade de Artes e Humanidades da USJ, com o patrocínio da UNESCO MIL ALLIANCE, ARTECH International e CIAC, sendo a obra de arte patrocinada pela Fundação Macau.
De acordo com o Professor Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, que concebeu o modelo do Simpósio Tell.Me, este é o primeiro de uma série de eventos a realizar anualmente sobre esta temática, prevendo-se uma participação tendencialmente internacional, para além dos estudantes do doutoramento. O Simpósio Tell.Me 2024 abarcou cerca de quatro dezenas de participantes de mais de uma dezena nacionalidades.
