Promoting Cultural Inheritance and Career Exploration Through Hands-On Experience with Traditional Portuguese Dance.

The Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organised a culturally enriching event—the Portuguese Folk Dance Workshop at the Kent Wong Gallery in the USJ Ilha Verde Campus on 22 March, 2025. The workshop was professionally guided by “Macau no Coração”, and sponsored by Macao Foundation.

The event took place in the afternoon and attracted around 15 participants. The members from the association provided a detailed introduction to the history of Portuguese folk dance, showcased various traditional costumes, and demonstrated basic dance steps. Students actively engaged with the association members, asking questions and participating in the interactive session. They also had the opportunity to learn simple folk dance steps, immersing themselves in this unique intangible cultural heritage.

This workshop was the fifth event of the USJ Mentorship Programme 24/25, designed to foster growth and connection between mentors and mentees through dance and interactive activities. In addition to the mentorship programme participants, other students were also invited to join the event, which was career-oriented, aiming to deepen their understanding of Macao’s cultural industry and its contribution to the local economy. Participants explored potential career paths in cultural preservation and the creative industries, while also learning how to preserve and promote traditional culture in a modern, career-oriented manner, contributing to sustainable cultural development.
