The initiative emphasized the importance of cherishing God’s creation and working collectively to create an eco-friendly environment for future generations.
The University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) participated in the environmental fair – “Praise the Earth, You and Him”, held on October 5, 2024. The event, co-organised by the Macau Diocesan Commission for Life, Bosco Youth Service Network, and the Daughters of St. Paul, aimed to foster a deeper connection between the public, nature, and faith. The initiative emphasized the importance of cherishing God’s creation and working collectively to create an eco-friendly environment for future generations. The fair featured various activities, including an opening ceremony, an environmental documentary screening, workshops on crafting with recycled materials, and exhibition booths from various organizations.
Professor Karen Tagulao, from USJ’s Institute of Science and Environment, delivered a presentation about ISE’s research on mangrove ecosystems in Macao. Her talk highlighted on-going restoration efforts as well as the critical role mangroves play in protecting Macao’s coastal areas from storms and erosion, improving water quality, and providing vital habitats for wildlife. She also outlined the importance of long-term monitoring to identify the most effective methods for restoring these ecosystems, strengthening coastal defences and enhancing biodiversity.
In addition to the presentation, the Institute hosted an informative booth where researchers engaged visitors in discussions about the significance of mangrove conservation. Through interactive displays, attendees better understood how mangroves contribute to coastal health and biodiversity. The ongoing research initiatives will support efforts to sustainably manage Macao’s coastal ecosystems, ensuring their protection for the environment and the communities that rely on them.
This event provided a valuable platform for raising public awareness about the importance of mangrove conservation and highlighted the critical role that science and community engagement play in safeguarding Macao’s natural heritage.
