USJ/ISE Joins the Portuguese National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV) to Expand Nature-Based Solutions in Urban Environments

By joining the association, USJ/ISE seeks to broaden its scope, exploring other NBS such as green walls and green roofs, and collaborate with the association to facilitate these initiatives.
The University of Saint Joseph’s Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) has officially joined the Portuguese National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV) on April 11, 2024. The ANCV is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) aimed at promoting and emphasising the significant importance of green infrastructures in cities and the various contributions that these can offer to the creation of healthy, sustainable, biodiverse, and resilient urban territories. In pursuit of its mission, ANCV facilitates collaboration between companies, municipalities, national, and international research groups, with the most recent addition being ISE.
The Institute of Science and Environment has been actively engaged in research and outreach activities related to nature-based solutions (NBS), particularly focusing on mangroves. By joining the association, USJ/ISE seeks to broaden its scope, exploring other NBS such as green walls and green roofs, and collaborate with the association to facilitate these initiatives. Additionally, the main campus of USJ located in Ilha Verde is designed as a “Green Campus,” providing existing infrastructure conducive to relevant projects.
On one hand, ISE aims to contribute by offering a unique perspective on the application of NBS in the context of a highly urbanised, sub-tropical city like Macao. As a research institution, ISE is positioned to provide science-based approaches to how NBS, such as green roofs/walls, can address environmental challenges in highly urbanised coastal cities. ISE intends to share its experiences in utilising NBS to tackle environmental issues in coastal cities, particularly those highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

USJ/ISE adere à Associação Nacional de Coberturas Verdes (ANCV) para expandir soluções baseadas na natureza em ambientes urbanos
O Instituto de Ciência e Meio Ambiente (ISE) da Universidade de São José (USJ) aderiu recentemente, no passado dia 11 de Abril, à Associação Nacional de Coberturas Verdes (ANCV). A ANCV é uma organização não governamental (ONG) que tem como objetivo promover e realçar a importância significativa das infra-estruturas verdes nas cidades e os diversos contributos que estas podem oferecer para a criação de territórios urbanos saudáveis, sustentáveis, biodiversos e resistentes. Na consecução da sua missão, a ANCV facilita a colaboração entre empresas, autarquias, grupos de investigação nacionais e internacionais, sendo o mais recente o ISE.
O ISE tem-se empenhado activamente em actividades de investigação e divulgação relacionadas com soluções baseadas na natureza (SbN), com especial incidência nos mangais. Ao aderir à associação, o ISE/USJ procura alargar o seu âmbito, explorando outras SbN, como paredes e telhados verdes, e colaborar com a associação para facilitar estas iniciativas. Adicionalmente, o campus principal do USJ, localizado na Ilha Verde, foi concebido como um “Campus Verde”, fornecendo as infra-estruturas existentes conducentes a projectos relevantes.
Como instituição de investigação, o ISE fornecerá abordagens científicas sobre como as SbN podem enfrentar desafios ambientais em cidades altamente urbanizadas e subtropicais, como Macau. Um dos objectivos do ISE é também compartilhar as suas experiências no uso de SbN para lidar com questões ambientais em cidades costeiras, especialmente aquelas altamente vulneráveis às mudanças climáticas. Com esta adesão, o ISE poderá ampliar as suas SbN em ambientes urbanos e contribuirá para a promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável e da resiliência urbana.
