USJ Macao Soccer Team Competes in Zhuhai Tournament

USJ Soccer Team participated in the Gree Cup 2024 Zhuhai-Macao University Student Soccer Championship in Zhuhai.
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Soccer Team competed in the GREE Cup 2024 Zhuhai-Macao University Student Soccer Championship (“格力杯” 2024珠澳大学生足球冠军赛) Zhuhai, China, from the 26th October to the 9th of November. This event attracted a total of eight teams competing together, with the university aiming to facilitate mutual cultural exchange among students of diverse nationalities and foster collective growth through sports.
The opening match took place on the 26th of October, with members of the USJ Soccer Team hailing from Mainland China, Guinea Bissau, Thailand, Angola, Portugal, and the Philippines, enriching the team’s culture and camaraderie spirit. This marks their first visit to China, the players inscribed as a new chapter in history on the field.
Mamadu Fati, the team captain from Guinea-Bissau, highlighted, “In our third match which I considered the most difficult one, because we came from one match day before which was less the 24 hours, but despite the pressure, fitness saturation, our team rallied together, showcasing our hard work and dedication which lead us to win the match at the end, so the thrill of working in sync with my teammates was an experience i had never felt before.”
Pedro Manhão Sou, coach of the team, believes that as the team returns to Macao, they carry with them not only memories of their first tournament but also a renewed sense of determination. He anticipates that this competition experience will shape the team technically and mentally, enhancing their overall performance. Simultaneously, the university plans to build on this experience, aiming to participate in more tournaments in the future, develop athletic programmes, and provide students with opportunities for growth both on and off the field, focusing on the personal and team development of the students.
