USJ Macao signed cooperative agreements with Foon Yew High Schools Johor Bahru and Kulai, and participated in the China Higher Education Fair 2024 held in Johor and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, during a visit organised by the Macao Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ).
The Macao Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) recently organised a visit to prominent educational institutions in Malaysia. Representatives from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao, alongside delegates from six other local higher education institutions, engaged in a series of productive meetings and activities aimed at fostering educational partnerships and promoting academic opportunities.
The visit, took place from 19th to 24th March, and included a visit to Foon Yew Schools in Malaysia and a participation in the China Higher Education Fair 2024 held in Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
During their visit to Foon Yew School on March 20th, USJ signed cooperative agreements with Foon Yew High Schools Johor Bahru and Kulai. These agreements pave the way for eligible students recommended by the two schools to apply for a specially tailored USJ scholarship opportunity, including an application fee waiver.
In addition to signing agreements, representatives from USJ had the opportunity to showcase the advantages of studying at the university to grade 11 and grade 12 students from the two prominent Chinese schools in Malaysia.
Following these visits, USJ representatives, including Mr. Ben Lei, Assistant Manager of CPRO, Mr. Dickson Kyee, Officer of CPRO, and Miss Sherwin Hng Xuan Wen, USJ’s Malaysian student ambassador, attended the China Higher Education Fair 2024. The fair, organised by the United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) and the Association of Graduates from Universities and Colleges of China, Malaysia, attracted approximately forty higher education institutions from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. The fair, held on March 21st at Foon Yew High School Seri Alam and on March 23rd at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, provided an ideal platform for USJ to showcase its academic offerings and engage with prospective students.
This year holds special significance as it marks the fiftieth anniversary of China-Malaysia Diplomatic Relations and the seventieth anniversary of Dong Zong. The sessions of China Higher Education Fair 2024 form part of the hundred activities commemorating the anniversary of China-Malaysia Diplomatic Relations.
In his opening remarks at the Education Fair held in the Malaysian capital, His Excellency Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, Mr. Ouyang Yujing, warmly welcomed all participating tertiary education institutions, including the Macau delegation. He emphasized the importance of “high-quality development as the lifeblood of education,” echoing the Chinese Report on the Work of the Government 2024.
In their welcome speeches at both education fairs held in Seri Alam and Kuala Lumpur, the hosts urged universities to provide more financial aid to disadvantaged Malaysian students and to remove restrictions, enabling the two associations and schools in Malaysia to recommend more students to study abroad. This, in turn, provides students with greater options for pursuing their further studies.
USJ Macao has been committed to providing incentives for Malaysian students, evident through the signing of agreements with Dong Zong in April 2023 and the two Foon Yew Schools in 2024, respectively.
