On September 23rd 2024, University of Saint Joseph Faculty of Business and Law and The Chinese Traditional Culture (Macau) Exchange and Development Association jointly invited Mr. Kelvin Tan, Chairman of the Macao ASEAN International Chamber of Commerce and Executive Vice President of International Marketing of Sands China Limited  and Professor Sonny Lo, Vice President of HKU SPACE and honorary professor of the Department of Politics and Public Administration of the University of Hong Kong to a round table talk regarding the policies towards Hong Kong and Macao during the “Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China” and presented their interpretation to more than 80 masters students and professors from different disciplines.

The two speakers were warmly received by Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice President of Student Affairs of the University of Saint Joseph in Macau (USJ), and Professor SERGIO GOMES, Head of the Department of Business Administration of the Faculty of Business and Law.

Ms. Mani Fok, President of the Chinese Traditional Culture (Macau) Exchange and Development Association said: “This event was very meaningful for its the first time English was used as the language of discussion to convey relevant policy decisions to local and foreign students. Thanks to President Kelvin Tan and Professor Sonny Lo for being able to accurately communicate the decision-making spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to our audience. I hope that there will be more opportunities for relevant activities to be conducted in English in the future, so that China’s development policies can be communicated with teachers and students without language barriers.”

Mr. Kelvin Tan pointed out during the discourse, “The Third Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China marks the central government’s continued efforts to balance the public and private sector economies and strengthen support for the latter, and hopes to establish a strong national innovation ecosystem. By empowering local governments, the government seeks to solve economic and social challenges to promote long-term consumption.  Further, green transformation is positioned as a key component to achieve China’s national development goals. In the development direction of Macao’s youth and government, Macao is emphasized to strengthen talent cultivation and strengthen the country’s opening up to the outside world. To better play its role, especially as a bridge for countries along the “One Belt and One Road” and to deepen the connection with the Portuguese – Speaking countries through the Macao “platform”.  Last but not least use the “Hengqin – Macao”developmental model as an example and integrate it into the overall development of the Greater Bay Area. “

Professor Sonny Lo further reflected the closer integration of Hengqin and Macau,” Now that Hengqin is developing rapidly with the surrounding areas of Macau, including Hong Kong and Shenzhen Qianhai, which will also become closer.  This means by 2047 and 2049 respectively, Hong Kong and Macao will further integrate into the Greater Bay Area. The socio-economic integration of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macao and Zhuhai is accelerating. Therefore, young people and entrepreneurs from Hong Kong and Macao should seize this golden opportunity: (1) gain a deeper understanding of the cities in the Greater Bay Area; (2) Understand how Macau can fully play its role as a bridge between China’s Greater Bay Area and the rest of the world; (3) Seize opportunities and explore new economic areas. In short, Macau is more deeply integrated into the Greater Bay Area and provides opportunities for Macau’s young businesses. This provides us with excellent opportunities to develop innovative businesses in the coming years.”
