The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is establishing an incubator with two local partners, Attorney Bruno Nunes, Founder of BN Lawyers, and Marco Rizzolio, Founder of Follow Me Macau. The Agreement of Incorporation was signed at the USJ’s Notary’ office on 29 April 2022.
The incubator Macau Spin Incubator Center Limited is a project under USJ’s Faculty of Business and Law (FBL). It serves as a platform for startups from Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) to incubate in Macau and be bridged to incubators in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and vice-versa. Macau Spin targets, in a first stage startups in Tourism Tech, Fintech, and Social Tech for Social Enterprises which are areas of research and development in line with the Faculty’s strategy.
The strategy of Macau Spin lies in developing a network of strategic partners: incubators, potential investors, mentors, and experts in and of the PSCs and GBA markets, exploiting the strength of USJ in its connection and knowledge of the PSCs, as well as the geographic position of Macau as a city of the GBA.
According to the Rector of USJ, Professor Stephen Morgan, “USJ has a unique and privileged role as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries. This incubator provides a concrete way in which we can provide academic and professional support and mentoring to business who want to seize the opportunities this platform offers”.
Macau Spin is now going through the incorporation process and aims to start running in the coming Academic year, September 2022. The first phase is a virtual incubator providing mentoring, networking, and startup support to its members from the GBA or the PSCs. Although the primary targets are startups from the GBA and PSCs, the incubator’s service is also provided to local startups.
