The public lecture “Beach plastics and art”, organised by the Institute of Science and Environment and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, will be held on February 16.
ABOUT THE TALK:
In this seminar, artist Ricardo Ramos will share his unique perspective on ocean debris and its role in shaping our environment and society. Ricardo will delve into the significance of converting ocean debris into art and the impact this has on reducing our environmental footprint. He will also shed light on the importance of our daily choices and actions and their far-reaching effects on the planet. Follow Ricardo on his journey as “xicogaivota,” as he transforms plastic waste collected from beaches into stunning works of art, raising environmental awareness and inspiring change.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Ricardo Ramos (also known as xicogaivota)
Artist, Portugal
Ricardo Ramos is a professional fisherman and barnacle catcher who has transformed his life in 2017. He now dedicates himself to collecting debris from non-commercial beaches and turning it into art pieces. He has been spreading awareness about environmental conservation through his art, and has given lectures in schools and conducted workshops for over 5,600 children in Portugal and other countries. He is also actively involved in personal missions in countries such as Mozambique, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe. During these missions, he shares his expertise and art, creating pieces that he sells to support local communities and inspiring them to start beach cleanup initiatives. His passion for environmental conservation and art has made a significant impact, and Ricardo (Xicogaivota) continues to inspire and educate people through his work.
