Short Bio

Rowena Ruiwen CHEN earned a Ph.D. degree (specializing in Religious Studies) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She teaches at Ming Hua Theological College, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican-Episcopal Church). She is also the researcher of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Archives. She has been OeAD Scholar of Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, Austria. 

 

Her research interests centers on history of Christianity, history of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican-Episcopal Church), history of Christian Arts, history of music, encounters between East and West. 

She has taught and lectured in Asia and Europe. Her teaching area include Religious Life in Chinese Culture, History of Christianity in China, Classic Texts in Christian Theology, History of Chinese Christian Arts.

Her most recent individual academic books include Echoes of Kulangsu: Christianity and Christian Musicians in China (Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press, forthcoming, 2025).The Everflowing Gospel: The History of St. Stephen’s Church (1865–2015) (2023), A Short Biography of John Shaw Burdon: Bishop of Hong Kong (2018), and Fragrant Flowers Bloom: T. C. Chao, Bliss Wiant and the Contextualization of Hymns in Twentieth Century China (2015). 

She has held piano recitals in 2005 and 2010.
